Board Certified General Surgeon Dr. Stephanie Y. Hung earned her medical degree and completed her residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock AR. She is trained in the latest laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques and has a special interest in breast, thyroid and gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Hung decided to go into medicine at a fairly young age. In high school, she volunteered in a hospital and decided then that she enjoyed helping people. In college, she found a love of biology, which was her major for both undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her first job out of college was as a research assistant at The Scripps Research Institute, Department of Molecular & Experimental Medicine in California. After 2 ½ years with the Institute, she decided to go to medical school to become a doctor.

In medical school, Dr. Hung did a number of rotations and ultimately decided on general surgery because she found it challenging and at the same time enjoyed seeing the immediate results of her work to help patients feel better. “As a surgeon, what you do has a very big impact on people’s lives. One day they feel horrible, the next day you remove their appendix or fix a hernia, and they almost immediately feel better! It’s very gratifying knowing I can help people.”

At the same time, she enjoys getting to know her patients and developing a relationship with them. “To me, being a doctor is a privilege and, as a surgeon, I have the additional responsibility of knowing that what I do is very intimate; my patients put their trust in me to help them feel better, and I want them to know that I am on that journey with them.”

She is looking forward to being part of the community here in Calvert. “I grew up in a small town, then went to San Diego for college and graduate school, which was very different. I specifically chose Little Rock for medical school because it didn’t feel like such a big city. When I came to Calvert, I was very comfortable. It has the small community feel that I grew up with.”

As part of Calvert Surgical Care, Dr. Hung provides comprehensive surgical consultation and treatment for the full spectrum of general surgical needs of adults and older children.
