"There will be something for all ages to enjoy," said Kasia Sweeney, director of public relations and marketing at CMH. "Pre-game activities for children, interactive displays, free giveaways, live music performed by our own talented employees and of course, birthday cake."
A lot has changed since Calvert Memorial first opened its doors in 1919. There were about 10,800 people living in the county then. Now, nearly 90,000 people call Calvert their home. Over time, as the county grew, so did the hospital - upgrading technology, improving facilities and expanding services. A total of 179 patients were cared for in the hospital's first year -- now CMH serves more than 300 patients every day.
There have been other changes, too. The medical staff has grown to 228, offering some 42 specialties. The hospital is now the county's largest private employer - with 1,072 employees. It has satellites in Dunkirk, Solomons and North Beach and the main campus includes a medical office building and a childcare center. Very soon, the new Calvert Medical Arts Center will open there. It will be home to a new breast center and neuroscience center These programs will bring together the region's top experts in their fields to provide comprehensive and coordinated care for patients who require advanced treatment. The center's state-of-the-art imaging will provide the highest level of diagnostic capability.
"Activities during our birthday celebration will reflect upon the hospital's long history," said Xinis, "while looking toward the future and many more years of caring for Southern Maryland residents."
