Maryland Inpatient Care Specialists (MDICS) has joined the adult hospitalist program at Calvert Memorial Hospital. The Annapolis-based medical group specializes in caring for patients while they are in the hospital.
"We are looking forward to integrating our services into the high quality medical care available at Calvert Memorial Hospital, " said Dr. Doug Mitchell of MDICS. "CMH has a great medical team and an enthusiastic nursing staff." He was director of the hospitalist program at Anne Arundel Medical Center for seven years.
Hospitalists have been caring for adult patients at CMH since 2003. A pediatric program was added last year. "The feedback from our patients has been very positive," said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. "They appreciate the accessibility."
The program offers many benefits to patients and their families, said Xinis. The patient sees the hospitalist as often as needed. More timely care is available because the hospitalists are onsite around the clock and can modify treatment or follow up on the spot.
Additionally, the hospitalists are available throughout the day to speak with family members to explain procedures and test results. More importantly, they work closely with the patient’s primary care physician – providing updates and asking for information when they need it.
"Having a hospitalist care for you," said Mitchell, "is like having your own doctor just down the hall from your room throughout your stay at Calvert Memorial Hospital."
Mitchell, who is board certified in internal medicine, will be providing daytime coverage along with internists Dr. Hung Davis, Dr. Cheryl Hepp, Dr. Iram Khan, Dr. Charlene Letchford and nurse practitioner D-Ann Weller.
Dr. Chang Choi, who is board certified in internal medicine, will head the Calvert Memorial Hospital hospitalist team when he joins the staff next month. He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2001 and completed his training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has been a member of the AAMC hospitalist team since 2004.
Other practitioners who will be at CMH part-time are internists Dr. Tim Capstack, Dr. Steve Hamlette and physician’s assistant Wendy Riekers.
Evening coverage will continue to be provided by Dr. Waseema Dalvi, Dr. Parul Jani, Dr. Vincent Okeke and Dr. Julie Surratt, who are currently members of the CMH active medical staff.
