Dr. Eric Floranda
Prince Frederick, MD (Aug. 31, 2008) - Dr. Eric Floranda has joined Chesapeake Neurology Associates and the active medical staff at Calvert Memorial Hospital. The fellowship-trained neurologist specializes in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular diseases such as peripheral neuropathy, myasthenia gravis and Lou Gehrig's disease.
Floranda completed his fellowship training in neuromuscular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, currently ranked among the top five hospitals in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report. During this period, he had the opportunity to work with some of the leading neurologists in this field.
While at the University of Connecticut for his two-year residency, he served as chief resident in neurology. He received intensive training in stroke treatment at Hartford Hospital, which was the first accredited 24/7 stroke center in the state. Prior to that, he spent two years in internal medicine training at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New Jersey and graduated from the University of the Philippines in 2001.
"Neurological diseases are mostly chronic or potentially debilitating and can have a huge impact not only on the patient but also their families," said Floranda. "To be able to assist these people in coping with the condition and help improve their lives is fulfilling."
"I like to foster a mutual partnership with my patients in managing their health," he added. "I am also a strong believer in open communication, so I encourage my patients to ask questions."
Floranda has performed numerous electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies. An EMG is most often performed when patients have unexplained muscle weakness; while nerve conduction studies are done to find damage to the peripheral nervous system. He is also trained in quantitative sudomotor axon reflex testing (QSART), skin biopsy for intraepidermal nerve fiber analysis and, muscle and nerve pathology.
Chesapeake Neurology Associates offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment of conditions ranging from headaches and seizures to chronic progressive diseases such as dementia and Parkinson's disease.
