CMH honors physicians for community service

Six local physicians were recognized by Calvert Memorial Hospital for their leadership and service to the community. The honorees were Dr. Harry Kerasidis, Dr. Mark Kushner, Dr. Kraig Melville, Dr. Manbir Singh, Dr. Debra Spatz and Dr. Gyan Surana.

Kerasidis and Melville were honored for their invaluable work in developing the stroke program at CMH. In February, the hospital was designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS). This designation assures stroke patients that Calvert is using the latest and best therapies and treatments to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Kerasidis, who joined the CMH medical staff in 1992, is board certified in neurology and sleep medicine. He is the director of the hospital's sleep disorders center and stroke center. Melville, who joined the CMH medical staff in 2000, is board certified in emergency medicine. He is medical director of the emergency department at CMH and serves on the hospital's medical executive committee.

Spatz was recognized for her advocacy of osteoporosis. "She was instrumental in helping us to develop our Osteoporosis Community Outreach Program," said Margaret Fowler, community wellness director at CMH. The program promotes awareness of bone health and the risk factors associated with the disease. Spatz, who is board certified in orthopedic surgery, frequently volunteers her time to give community talks and participate in heel screenings.

Singh was saluted for his contributions to improving pediatric care at CMH. "He has been a long standing partner with community wellness," said Fowler. "He teaches parenting classes and has been a presenter on many topics including asthma and MRSA." The board-certified pediatrician joined CMH in 2004.

Kushner was honored for 26 years of service to CMH and its patients. "Your dedication and loyalty to the health and welfare of our community is a tribute to you," said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. Kushner joined the CMH medical staff in 1982. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.

Xinis paid tribute to Surana for his "commitment and dedicated service to the patients and staff at CMH." Last year, he cared for more than 500 patients who were admitted to the hospital. Surana, who is board certified in internal medicine, joined the CMH medical staff in 1997. He has also served as the medical director of the Calvert County Nursing Center, Solomons Nursing Center, Charlotte Hall Veterans Home and Asbury-Solomons.
