When the Calvert Health Information Exchange (C-HIE) goes live March 2011, Calvert will be the first county in the state with a comprehensive, community based network. This new technology is an important part of improving your care. Similar to the Maryland Health Information Exchange, if you see a participating provider, you are automatically enrolled in the C-HIE unless you opt out. So, it's important for you to understand how it works and the benefits for you - the patient.

What is a health information exchange?
The C-HIE is a secure, electronic way for participating doctors to instantly access the medical information they need about you to provide faster, safer, high quality care.

Why is it important?
By using the C-HIE, your doctor can view recent lab results and other tests even if they were done at another location. Your care is not delayed while one office contacts another to get what they need.

How was this information shared before?
Previously, doctors would call, mail or fax each other the requested information but this process could take hours or even days.

What are the benefits?
By participating in the C-HIE, you are giving your doctor real-time access to your most recent health information. It also makes it easier to refer you to other specialists or hospitals and you can feel confident that your entire healthcare team knows what is happening with your care.

How is the information protected?
The new system is actually more secure than the old "paper shuffle." The Calvert Health Information Exchange (C-HIE) follows all state and federal laws (including HIPAA). Only authorized medical professionals (directly involved in your care) may access this shared information.

What information will be shared?
Your electronic health record (available to be shared with a participating physician) will include lab results, X-ray reports, diagnoses, medication histories and allergies along with hospital discharge and emergency room summaries and other pertinent data, but will not include sensitive information such as detailed mental health records restricted by state regulation.

Is my doctor connected?
At present, the local exchange includes 30 providers with a focus on primary care. Our goal is to have 80 connected by 2012, about half of whom will be specialists

Can I choose to opt out from C-HIE?
Yes,
by submitting the form (download PDF) to your physician's office or the hospital. This means that doctors will not be able to search the Calvert Health Information Exchange (C-HIE) to get health information about you. However, even if you opt out, they will still be able to use other means such as phone calls, faxes, mail and referrals to obtain needed information. You will receive confirmation that your form has been received and processed.

What could happen if you choose to opt out?
In some instances, incomplete health information could result in an inaccurate diagnosis, an adverse medication event, an inadvertent allergic reaction, duplicative testing, additional expense, inconvenience and delays in care.

If you have additional questions about the Calvert Health Information Exchange (C-HIE):
