Community Benefits 2009
Community Health Assessment
Your health is our mission. This is why Calvert Memorial Hospital is partnering with others in our community - our churches, our schools and our businesses - to meet people where they are.
2009 Highlights & Accomplishments:
The Health Ministry Team Network continues to be a vital component of our outreach efforts to promote prevention and wellness. The hospital links the faith community with services and provides free educational materials. The network has 23 area churches as active members that meet monthly to address a wide range of health topics.
During Cover the Uninsured Week they spread out across the county to reach out to those without health insurance. They set up special enrollments stations to help eligible residents apply for local programs like Calvert Healthcare Solutions (CHS) so they have access to primary care.
The eight-year-old non-profit group partners the hospital with local physicians, social services, the health department and the chamber of commerce. In FY 2009, 66 patients had 133 lab visits, 28 patients had 39 radiology visits and 23 patients were seen 47 times at Twin Beaches Community Health Center.
Through Calvert Community Dental Care we provided basic dental care to 154 patients at two locations since September. The grant-funded program improves access to dental care for low-income families and those who are uninsured or underinsured. To date, we have received 44 referrals from the emergency department for dental care.
By leasing space in existing dental offices, we can use more funding for direct patient care. Additionally, we formed an Oral Health Task Force that includes members from the local health department, social services, and the public school system, early learning centers and two local dentists that meets bi-monthly.
CMH is also helping local companies develop worksite wellness programs for their employees through KeepWell@Work. We offer a full range of services from health lectures, screenings and fairs to comprehensive health risk assessments, wellness coaching and claims data medical management. Currently, we're working with Constellation Energy, Bay Shore Pediatrics and Calvert County Public Libraries.
The hospital has joined with World Gym Fitness Centers to promote good nutrition and fitness through our Obesity Reduction Initiative. By partnering with World Gym, we're able to offer a registered dietitian on-site as part of our healthy lifestyle programs for local adults and youth at four locations in Calvert and St. Mary's counties.
Getting regular preventive screenings are among the most important things you can do for yourself. CMH offers community screenings for blood pressure, prostate cancer, vascular, cholesterol/glucose, osteoporosis, body composition and new starting in 2010 resting metabolic rate.
Of the 59 men screened for prostate cancer, six had abnormal findings and were referred for follow-up care. In all, 131 participants took advantage of the cholesterol screenings. During the first quarter of the current fiscal year, six of the seven who repeated their test had lowered their levels. Due to high demand, we increased our vascular screenings to twice a week.
Together, with the local health department we implemented a countywide flu education campaign. The multi-faceted awareness effort included posters, brochures and regular electronic updates posted on both of our websites. The materials were widely distributed at physician offices, PTA meetings, local libraries, county buildings and other public places.
By working together we can keep our community healthy!
