Nurturing Necessities

"Our goal is to help mothers and their babies enjoy the most rewarding and satisfying breastfeeding experience possible," said Betty Ellis, board certified lactation consultant. "It's not unusual for new moms to experience some problems after they go home. Many times just one consultation can make the world of difference."

Nurturing Necessities, located in the Family Birth Center, is a great resource for expecting and new mothers, offering childbirth classes, breastfeeding education and a unique shop that sells nursing supplies, breast pumps and baby items.  The hours of operation are as follows: Monday  1-5:30 p.m. Tuesday 1-6:00 p.m.  Wednesday 1-5:30 p.m. Thursday 1-5 p.m.  Friday 1-5 p.m.

The following services are offered:

Childbirth Classes
Classes are held on Saturdays at the hospital and taught by experienced obstetric nurses and certified childbirth educators.  Topics include relaxation and breathing techniques, medication options, induction of labor and cesarean section information. To register, please call 410-535-8233.

ABCs of Breastfeeding
This prenatal breastfeeding class ensures that Moms and their babies get off to the right start.  The two-hour class is offered monthly at the hospital and taught by a board-certified lactation consultant.  Moms should register at least one month before delivery.  To register, please call 410-535-8233.

Outpatient Lactation Services
A board certified lactation consultant is available by appointment for help with any breastfeeding issue from latching technique to weaning.  There is a fee for this service. To make an appointment, call 410-414-4819.

Breastfeeding Support Group for Moms and Babies
A weekly support group specifically for breastfeeding moms is held on Wednesdays, from 1:30-3:30 p.m.  The free, drop-in group is led by a board- certified lactation consultant.
