After the Birth
| After recovery, mother and baby will stay in one of the center's 12 private rooms. The rooms are warm and inviting with a sleeper chair, well padded rocker, larger shower and a built-in hair dryer. New mothers can unwind with a complimentary massage and enjoy nutritious snacks of fresh fruit, granola bars and juice from our well-stocked pantry.
Your baby will stay with you 24 hours a day, and our nurses will educate the whole family on new baby and mom care, encouraging "hand-on" learning in a relaxed environment. A board certified lactation specialist will visit each mother who chooses to breastfeed
The baby's father or your support person and your children are welcome to visit anytime. Baby's father or your support person are encouraged to stay overnight. After recovery, family and friends can visit from 1 -9 p.m
To ensure the safety of your new arrival, you, baby, and baby's father or your support person will all receive matching ID bracelets to wear while in the birth center. These help the staff to identify you and your family. Additionally, the birth center is privately located to allow for close monitoring of visitors. Using the latest technology, special security doors lock automatically when a baby nears the exit.
Going Home
If you have a vaginal delivery, you will probably go home in two days, depending on your insurance. If you have a C-section, you will probably go home in three-four days, depending on your insurance. The day you leave, the baby's doctor will do a complete physical. Baby will also receive a hearing screening test and with your consent, a PKU blood test. If your baby is a boy and he is going to be circumcised, it is usually also done at this time.
Every new mom receives a copy of "Caring for Your New Baby," developed by the Family Birth Center. The handy resource guide covers the basics of baby care and when to call for help. In addition, we'll send you a monthly parenting newsletter that provides great information about what to expect in the first year.
