The Center for Breast Care at Calvert Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of breast surgery expert Dr. Steven Nagel to its multidisciplinary team. Dr. Nagel has more than 25 years’ experience dedicated to diagnosing and treating women with breast cancer and benign diseases of the breast. He replaces interim director Dr. Theodore Tsangaris, who stepped in for Dr. Sheldon Goldberg, who died in a tragic rafting accident last summer.
The Center for Breast Care at CMH was the dream of Dr. Goldberg, who worked tirelessly for two years to create the facility that became the first of its kind in Southern Maryland. The center, which opened in 2010, brings together a team of breast health experts with an experienced navigator backed by the latest technology in one comfortable, convenient location.
“We are very pleased that Dr. Nagel has agreed to help us move the breast center forward … to fulfill Dr. Goldberg’s vision for providing comprehensive breast care to Southern Maryland residents,” said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. “The hospital leadership is committed to making sure the breast center forever stands as a living symbol to his remarkable service to our community.”
Dr. Nagel trained under noted cancer surgeon Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr. at Howard University College of Medicine and went on to complete a fellowship in the surgical treatment of breast disease at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the foremost breast cancer research and treatment facility in the US. Since 1991, he has devoted his practice to advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques and is skilled in leading-edge breast conservation surgery.
“The most important thing I’ve learned from my breast cancer patients,” said Dr. Nagel, “is that everyone is different. They are individuals and have individual needs. And if I sit with them and look into their eyes and listen to their concerns and hear what they care about, it will make me a better surgeon.”
“I chose surgical oncology as a specialty because I’m an optimist,” he said. “I see the potential for the best possible outcome with every patient. I can’t cure every patient but I can help all of them.”
“Most patients are candidates for breast conservation surgery,” said Dr. Nagel. “My goal is always to identify the least invasive surgical technique that can achieve the optimal outcome with superior cosmetic results.”
“I have an intense dedication to excellence,” he said. “You know it when you see it and that’s why I chose to come to Calvert’s breast center.”
“My philosophy of care begins and ends with the individual,” said Dr. Nagel. “I want them to be as comfortable as possible and to know that I will do my best to identify and address all of their needs as it relates to their quality of life.”
In his new role as medical director, Dr. Nagel will see patients at the CMH breast center and perform surgery at Calvert Memorial Hospital on a part-time basis. Additionally, he will collaborate on patient care planning with other members of the breast center team and participate in multidisciplinary patient care conferences and tumor boards.
