New Oncologist Joins CMH Staff

Oncologist Dr. Bilal Ahmed has joined the active medical staff at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Dr. Ahmed, who trained at one of the top cancer centers in the country, has joined with Calvert Hematology & Oncology, an affiliate of Calvert Physician Associates, in Prince Frederick. He specializes in cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and prostate.

“We are proud to be attracting the very best physicians to help us deliver the highest quality care to our patients,” said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. “This is a time of great growth for the oncology services at Calvert Memorial Hospital with the opening of our new endoscopy and infusion therapy centers.”

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ahmed,” said Xinis. “His strong academic background represents an important addition to our clinical team and enhances the already top quality cancer care found at CMH.”

In 2010, Calvert Memorial’s cancer program once again earned a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Only one in four hospitals receive this very special approval.

Dr. Ahmed completed his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, which is affiliated with the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Widely respected as one of the premier cancer centers, in 2011 it earned the No. 1 spot in U.S News & World Report’s annual rankings for the best hospitals in cancer care.

He went on to complete his specialty training at The James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at Ohio State University. During his fellowship there, he participated in numerous research projects and was highly regarded by his peers for his work.

Additionally, he wrote chapters for two textbooks. One was on the comprehensive management of head and neck tumors that he wrote along with the top experts in the field at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The second chapter was on gastrointestinal cancers with the experts at Yale School of Medicine. He also participated in several clinical trials in collaboration with NIH and NCI and has published several research papers in the top journals of cancer.

“I am very pleased to be joining Calvert Hematology & Oncology,” said Dr. Ahmed. “I look forward to providing the community with a full continuum of cancer care services.” The group also includes board-certified oncologist Dr. Arati Patel and board-certified oncology nurse practitioner Sandra Cassell-Corbin.

Dr. Ahmed said his choice to pursue oncology as a specialty was influenced at a very early age when his grandfather died of leukemia at 47. “Those things stick in your mind,” he said. For him it was a choice made from the heart.

Dr. Ahmed said he spends a lot of time talking with his patients and their families explaining what the different stages mean, the treatment process step-by-step and details about their various options. “I believe that well-informed patients make well-informed choices,” he said. “I encourage them to ask questions and to be actively involved in all areas of their treatment.”

Calvert Hematology & Oncology is ideally located in Suite 105 of the Calvert Medical Office Building, close to outpatient phlebotomy and the infusion center for those patients receiving chemotherapy at CMH. For more information or to make an appointment, call 410-414-9116.
