5K CMH Breast Cancer Challenge this weekend (September 27, 2010)
Free health & wellness expo for all ages offered

Prince Frederick, MD

Join the fun at the Calvert Memorial Hospital Breast Cancer Challenge 5K walk/run on Oct. 2 at the Solomons Medical Center and help raise funds for a great cause – the Center for Breast Care at CMH. The hospital is also hosting a free health and wellness expo for all ages from 8 a.m. to noon as part of the family-friendly event.

It’s not too late to sign up for the 5K walk/run. Some 214 men, women and children ages seven to 82 have already signed up to take the challenge. The cost is $35 for adults and $25 for children 6-17 but ask about package deals. To pre-register, call 410-535-8233 . Free race T-shirts will be provided to all who pre-register plus the first 100 who sign up on-site.

The breast center, which opened in January, brings together a team of breast health experts – including breast radiologists from Johns Hopkins, with an experienced navigator, backed by the latest technology in one convenient location. It offers Southern Maryland women the same level of care they would find in a major metropolitan area right here in our community.

A rejuvenation tent with free refreshments and seated massage will be set up for all 5K participants. After the race, runners and walkers can take advantage of the health fair while waiting for their results. Top finishers in each category will receive prizes. Additionally, there will be door prizes and free giveaways for all participants.

Joining Calvert Memorial Hospital to sponsor the event are World Gym and Fitness Centers, Calvert Medical Imaging Center (CMIC) and the Brandon Greening Foundation for Cancer Awareness.

The health fair is open to all ages and is free for everyone even if you don’t participate in the walk/run. There will be informative displays, a “Passport to Good Health” for children 10 and under and free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, skin cancer, osteoporosis, vascular health and more. Some tests require pre-registration. To sign up, please call 410-535-8233.

On-site registration for the 5K run/walk starts at 7 a.m. Participants can warm up with a World Gym trainer at 8 a.m. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. For more information, call 410-535-8233.

Other activities are planned throughout October to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Oct. 12, share a casual dinner with friends at Calvert Memorial Hospital’s KeepWell Center and hear Dr. Naji Khouri, director for breast imaging at the Johns Hopkins Avon Breast Center and other members of the CMH breast center medical team discuss the latest advances in diagnosing and treating breast cancer. The event is free but space is limited. Pre-registration is required by Oct. 7. To sign up, call 410-535-8233 .

Additionally, the breast center and Calvert Medical Imaging Center are offering M&M Fridays in October. Sign up for a mammogram at CMIC on any Friday in October and get a free 15-minute seated massage after the exam plus a free osteoporosis screening, complimentary refreshments and special gifts. To make an appointment, call the breast center at 410-414-4700 .

Every year, women over 50 should have a breast exam with their mammogram. Now, you can get both in one easy visit at the Woman’s Wellness Center at CMH. And grant funding will help pay for those without insurance. Call 410-286-7992 to schedule your exam today.

World Gym fitness trainer James Sutton led an enthusiastic group of Calvert Memorial Hospital employees in a series of exercises in front of the Calvert Medical Arts Center, home to the hospital’s new Center for Breast Care.
