Volunteers Donate $100,000 to CMH (July 14, 2016)

The Calvert Health System recently celebrated their volunteers at the hospital’s annual appreciation lunch. One hundred and eighty-six volunteers were recognized for 21,862 donated hours, a fiscal savings to the hospital of more than a quarter of a million dollars, based on a $15 wage.

In addition, volunteers presented a check to the Calvert Memorial Hospital Foundation for $100,000. The CMH gift shop and auxiliary fundraising efforts generated $60,000 and Thrifty Ladies, the CMH all-volunteer thrift store located in Dunkirk, raised $40,000 for the Sheldon E. Goldberg Center for Breast Care.

President and CEO Dean Teague said, “The Calvert Health System family really appreciates the volunteers’ hard work, dedication and generosity. Their $100,000 donation to the Foundation is remarkable and they are tremendous assets to this organization. Our team is able to provide better care and service thanks to their efforts.”

Susan Stevens, Manager of Volunteer and Guest Services, added, “Every day, our volunteers give unselfishly of themselves, from the patient shuttle driver that picks you up, to the greeting from guest services at the front door, to the assistance someone needs in the surgical waiting room. Our volunteers are truly exceptional.”

Special recognition went to the five hospital volunteers who have contributed the most lifetime hours in their tenure: Karen Kellum, 12,162 hours; Philip Cahill, 8,971 hours; Norma Madella, 8,847 hours; Janet Allyn, 7,982 hours and Irene Norris, 7,540 hours. Also recognized were five volunteers with the most hours for 2015: Wanda Walker, Anna Thompson, Linda Angel, Karen Kellum and Wilhelmina Schultz.

Theresa Johnson, Executive Director of the Foundation, says, “The foundation is honored to work with the volunteers who give of their time, passion, and monies to make this a better hospital than it already is today. This is the largest, one-time gift the Auxiliary has ever made. We are so grateful for their generosity.”
